Primary
In our Primary department, there are six classes including children from 5- 12 years old.
In ascending order of age, we have:
Bees (Years 1 and 2)
Puffins (Years 3 and 4)
Foxes (Years 5 and 6)
Owls (Years 6 and 7)
Rabbits (our specialist Primary ABA provision for children aged from 5 up until 11)
Hedgehogs (our specialist PMLD provision for children aged from 5 up until 11)
Click for further details about our ABA Provision and PMLD provision.
In the other four classes, children are grouped according to age and therefore activities are planned and differentiated for individuals and groups during the school day.
Children are encouraged to participate in and anticipate our class routines, which involve: snack-times, songs relating to activities or times of the day, circle times, settling and home-time routines. Visual timetables are used to support and reassure children who need familiarity and/ or time to prepare for learning.
Our primary children learn through a termly theme, covering the different curriculum subjects through a wide variety of learning experiences. From the youngest classes upwards, there is a strong focus on building communication and social skills. Total communication approaches are used to develop a positive, inclusive class community. We endeavour to offer children exciting and memorable experiences across the curriculum, using multi-sensory learning and the outdoor classroom.
Even though the primary department consists of our youngest pupils, we are committed to supporting the development of independence by giving the children opportunities to apply learning across contexts (and in real-life situations) through role play and trips out in our locality.
